How we count

The statistics count businesses in the B2B address database of dieanalysten GmbH. All figures are deliberately minimum values: rather too low than too high.

Data basis

The basis is the company database of the dieanalysten address shop with currently more than 4,368,000 businesses in Germany. We count business entries with their own business address in Germany; branches with their own address may be included as separate entries. The database is updated daily and the statistics are recalculated afterwards.

Industries

Each business is assigned to one or more industries of our own taxonomy. Topics such as “bakeries” combine closely related industries; a business belonging to several of them is counted once.

Active businesses only

Businesses in liquidation, insolvency or deletion are excluded. Company websites are checked continuously: if a website is permanently unreachable, parked or announces a closure, the business is no longer counted.

Deduction and rounding

We deduct a flat 5% safety margin from every count and round down in the text (“more than 20,000”). The actual number of businesses may therefore be higher.

Official statistics

Official statistics and chambers use their own definitions (e.g. only businesses registered with a craft chamber, revenue thresholds, legal units instead of locations). Our figures complement them with a current, location-based view and are not directly comparable.

Population

Density per 100,000 inhabitants is based on rounded state population figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), as of December 31, 2023.
